Watch this and be a little happy

Andy over at Flaky Biscuit blogged about this, and I watched it, and it made me grin, so I’m blogging about it too. (Is there a word for this? Blogbacking? Leapblogging?)

The Improv Everywhere group did an impromptu performance at Grand Central Station in NYC. 207 people froze at the same time, for five minutes, then continued on with what they were doing. The video is so much fun to watch. I’m a big fan of impromptu group activities (Critical Mass, por exemplo) and the best part is seeing the reaction of the passers-by. Watch it! Watch it! Watch it!

This also reminds me of something my friend Meg described: a similar event, but the task being to take headphones and a music player, and dance around to your own music. I would love to do that – bopping around at the ped mall in Iowa City, near the Bean in Chicago, or … someplace cool with space in Boston. Boston Commons. Yeah. I like the idea of showing expression, and I LOVE the idea of a bunch of other people doing it at the same time. Like, later in the day, a passer-by might mention that they saw this crazy pink-haired, librarian-looking lady shakin’ it in front of their T stop, and their friend will say “OMG, I saw the same thing, except it was an Asian teenager headbanging.”

  1. That is so great! I could never do it with the peanut in the bjorn though…he would kind of throw the whole thing off. This is the kind of stuff that should be breaking news on CNN and npr.

  2. Wild – did you see the one where they invade Abercrombie? I think it was the same troop. Definitely look into it.

  3. I liked the one where they all froze in Home Depot…oh, and the cell phone orchestra in the bookstore is pretty awesome, too. 🙂

  4. Oh man. Part of me is so happy that there’s spontaneous dancing and singing in real life, just like West Side Story! But the other part of me is cheesed out by the totally musical-esque style of song they sang. It should have had a little more punch to it. I winced a little. But I loved it a little.

  5. Oh, I forgot to tell you that my roomie thought the frozen subway people was the best thing ever. And I quite agree.

Also, Pranktsgrup has done other stuff besides the library musical. I think I like the subway economics lectures, best.

  6. love these guys–i was witness to their no pants day on the subway a few weeks back…imagine all these random people walking around in their underwear with straight faces .hilarious. and it confused the shit out of me until i got home and heard about it on the news.
