I have a dog reading program in our library, we call it Paws for Reading. In the two years we have had the program, more than 275 children have participated in it. We use Love on a Leash, a Therapy Dog Organization. We have about 7-8 dogs that come on a regular basis. The program runs on Saturdays from 12:30 to 1:30. A difficult time, but the only possible one for us. We do schedule children because the program works best if the children read for several weeks. The idea is for them to read and build up their skills and confidence. The dogs and owners sit in a quiet place and the kids read a book of their choice. The owners do not tutor the children, if a child struggles with a word, they give the child an opportunity to work it out and then just tell them the word. The whole concept of the program is for the child to read in a non-judgementaljudgmentaled environment, dogs never correct or criticize, they just lovingly sit (or sleep) and listen, so does the owner. Is this program a success, absolutely, we sometimes have children sign up just once because they want to be with the dogs, that's fine with us. The extra benefit I love to see is when the dog comes into the library, the whole atmosphere changes, staff and patrons alike all seem more relaxed and smiling, which I guess, is the job of a therapy dog. Good luck with you program
