SCHOOLBOY Benedict Shaw rose to a “monster” book reading challenge.

The eight-year-old pupil has read more books in the last few months than some people do in a lifetime.

Benedict, from St Anne’s School on Aughton Street, signed up to do the Monster Reading Challenge atOrmskirk Library last October and has read 60 books since then at an average of seven books a month.

He first had to read 12 books to get his bronze monster reading award, then a further 24 books for his silver award and another 24 to achieve his gold.

Year 3 pupil Benedict was presented with an award at the library on Burscough Street.

His mum Fiona said Benedict, who was born in Sweden, had even tried reading some books in Swedish.

She said Benedict and youngest son William, four, both enjoy reading.

“He’s genuinely done this himself,” she said. “We all come along to the library together and he chooses books. He stays up all night reading, I have to go and stop him and he also reads at school.”

Benedict says his favourite author was Roald Dahl and his favourite book was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

He said: “I like how they can sometimes make books into films and I like the way the authors use their words and make their stories. I like action books.

“I read mostly by myself in my room, I have two books going at once then sometimes switch books. I am reading a Dick King-Smith book at the moment.”

Benedict said when he grows up he would like to be an author.
