Older kid crafts
At our library, we run a monthly program called The Young Artists Club. It is for grades 4 and up and every month we choose a different culture to learn about. This past month we did Ancient Greece and used air drying clay to make pots similar to those they made in Ancient Greece. It was a real hit!! We have also made papermache Egyptian pharoah masks and totem poles. All of these crafts have been really good for this age range with both boys and girls.
Here is a compiltion of the suggestions I received for craft ideas for
older children.
1. On the website, www.stevespanglerscience.com, check out the chromatology
t-shirts. It is easier than tie-dye.
2. We also clipped silk flower buds and with floral tape made flower pens.
3. We purchased small glass votives w candle from Michaels', which is a craft store. The kids clipped several colors of there choice into small squares and rectangle and smeared thin glue on the glass and made mosaic pattern.
4. A lunch size paper bag that looks like a memory box with a rectangle sheet that folds out with photos and graphics from wallpaper book, comics and newsprint. We even put together a 6 bag memory folder with a few more bags that the kids wrote phrases on iside like a card-then when given a a gift opens up into a large flower, Viva Martha Stewart.
5. You can't go wrong with tie-die t-shirts or decorating with fabric pens. You can check w/ Oriental trading for supplies. they also have backpacks, and visors to decorate and key chains too.
6. All ages and sexes seem to like scratch art. I also gave them old keyboard keys, molding clay, pipe cleaners and wiggle eyes and they designed computer "Bugs"
7. What about paper airplanes?
8. We provided old tins whichhad been painted with a single color of acrylic paint. The kids brought a poem or quote (and some actually composed their own poetry on the spot!) which we attached to the inside of the boxes and then drew and collaged on the outside of the boxes.
9. 1) duct tape crafts (lots of ideas on the internet...most boys made a wallet, most girls made a purse, then they went through the book we had and tried more advanced things...they wouldn't go home until we ran out of duct tape. Making a wallet takes 10-15 minutes at the most.
2) making slime (the Borax and elmers glue recipe), then adding food coloring. They loved playing with the color mixing.
